Club History
Potterne Cricket Club was formed, as part of Potterne Sports Club, in 1936. This isn't to say that the village hadn't been represented before that date - records of a match against Devizes in 1843 bear testament to the fact.
Few records exist of cricketing activities throughout the 19th Century, but an ignominious record was achieved early in the 20th. During a match in 1907 Potterne were bowled out for the score of 0, a feat that hopefully will never be repeated!
On March 27 1936, Potterne Sports Club was formed, covering cricket, football and tennis. The football section of the club didn't take off - the team wanted to play non-villagers, and that was against the club's rules. Interest died off in tennis, leaving cricket as the only sport represented by the club. This remained the case until the outbreak of the Second World War, when the Club ceased to function.
In 1947 interest in cricket was sufficient to enable the Club to start playing cricket again. Since then the Club has gone from strength to strength, and in this year has seen enough interest to run three teams on a Saturday for the first time in its history.
Now at the age of 72, the club is bigger and more successful than ever. The First XI are in the West of England Premier League Wiltshire Section , the Seconds in it's 2nd X1 equivalent, with the 3rds in Wiltshire League Division 7. We also have U11, U13 and U15 youth teams as well as U12 and U14 Girls sides. We have also recently completed our pavilion extension, making our facilities some of the best in the league. With the recent award of the ECB Clubmark accreditation and being made a Focus Club by the WCB the future looks bright at Potterne.
